Teaching monk
Phra Sarttra Thirapanyo is a Thai monk who is currently studying at SOAS. He graduated from Chiangmai University in Thailand and has been ordained as a Buddhist monk since 2001. Before beginning his meditation teaching in the UK, Phra Sarttra had conducted a number meditation teaching programmes for people of different age groups in Thailand, Germany and Switzerland. Despite his young age, he qualified as a meditation instructor for retreat programmes – one being Dokmaiban, a well-known weekly retreat programme held at Suan Panawat ,the main Dhammakaya Meditation Retreat Centre in Chiang Mai Province, Northern Thailand. He also qualified as a meditation examiner for intermediate-level Buddhist subjects at Dhammakaya Open University (DOU) USA

Overview
The one-to-one meditation classes are set up to provide a greater availability of meditation teaching especially for those who are not able to attend the Tuesday Evening classes. They are also aimed at those who are interested in Applied Buddhism or for those who already are attending the weekly Tuesday class, but feel that they would like to broaden their understandings of meditation practices and Buddhist concepts more.

The session consists of two parts including
[1] Meditation practice (30 minutes)
[2] Self-Reflection by using Buddhist concepts (30 minutes)

The voice from one of our students;
“When I started the course on Meditation at the Dhammakaya Temple in Knaphill, I had no previous knowledge or experience of meditation or the benefits it could have in improving my well being and life generally. The classes have always been very informative and have provided a strong base of knowledge. However, it is the one-to-one tutorial sessions held with the Teaching Monks that have helped to bring together everything I have learned and helped implement this in my own life. During the sessions, I am able to discuss how to evolve my understanding of meditation through solving and comprehending the problems in my life. This has resulted in a more positive and powerful outlook on life and has given me the ability to look beyond my problems and the issues of life and seek enlightenment and success in achieving my goals.”

Overview
DISUK is a pleased to announce a rare opportunity to practice an ancient form of meditation, in the Weekend Meditation Retreat with two teachers trained in the Thai monastic tradition.

In this retreat you will learn the Dhammakaya meditation technique. Its simplicity, originality and effectiveness have made the Dhammakaya method greatly cherished in Thailand and its international popularity is growing fast. It is about relaxation, self-discovery and purification of the mind. As such, the practice of this technique is not in conflict with any religions or creeds and is opened to anyone to try for themselves.

This proven technique was discovered in 1917 by the Most Venerable Phramongkolthepmuni, a renowned Thai Buddhist monk. Dhammakaya is an ancient Indian word that means “Body of the enlightenment”. The uniqueness of Dhammakaya meditation is that it teaches about the centre of the body as the natural home of the human mind as well as the inner gateway to enlightenment. The closer your mind is to its natural home, the closer you are to the natural state of supreme bliss. This kind of happiness is self-sustainable and independent of personal circumstances and external factors.

Dhammakaya meditation also has a moral impact on the mind. It cleanses the mind. So that people who meditate regularly become gentler, kinder and feel increasingly uncomfortable to harm anyone else physically or verbally. Anyone who wishes to give up any unpleasant habit or to acquire a good habit for their personal development or progress in their career should definitely try Dhammakaya mediation. Moreover, we can deepen our spiritual practice by meditation, as we really take time to look within and just be within the present moment.

Accommodation and toilets
In the retreat, we will provide you a mattress and a pillow which are designed for our meditation retreat programmes. Our beds are bulk beds. Please bring your own sleeping bag and blanket which are most compatible with your physical body and health.

For those who have just heard about the Tuesday meditation class and would like to join, please feel free to join any Tuesday session that is convenient to you. However, we strongly recommend that you make an online appointment to meet our teaching monk in the One-to-One Meditation Course for 1 hour prior to joining the class so you can become familiar with meditation concept and practice. This 1 hour session is good for catching up and preparing you for a full meditation session held weekly on Tuesday.

The total fee for the entire course is £50 for 10 sessions. Despite your late arrival to the course, you will be able to attend 10 sessions without a problem. For example, if you start attending on the 5th session in Term A, you can attend until the 5th session of Term B.

In June 2011, we have already updated pricing policy for this course. Once you have completed one 10 week course, there will be no further charge should you choose to keep attending. It will remain a beginners course suitable to those with no prior experience, but the course will also be adapted slightly to try to ensure that the topics covered and the level of detail will be useful to those familiar with meditation. Of course, even if the topics covered are already known, there is no harm in revision. Should you prefer, you are also welcome to join the class at 7:30, after the lecture but before the exercises and meditation.

While the temple finances will obviously be affected to a degree, continuing practice is of the utmost importance. Should you choose, you are always welcome to make a donation.
